River Landscape
Lewis Henry Meakin (American, 1850-1917)
The Union Club of Cleveland
Ohio landscape painter Lewis Henry Meakin was born to American parents in Newcastle, England, and came to North America with his family when he was ten, first to Canada and then to Cincinnati where the family settled permanently. After training in Munich and beginning a thirty-year tenure teaching at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, he sought further art education in Europe and studied in France with William Lamb Picknell in 1893-1894. The two men became fast friends and as painting companions they travelled the countryside near Picknell’s villa at Antibes. Meakin’s style tends towards softer and broader brushwork than Picknell’s. These qualities can be found in this scene of a quiet meadow, pond, and glimpse of village rooftops in the distance.
