Some of the best bird hunting in the country can be found in Northwest Ohio, and this fact attracted one of the finest dog painters in the history of American art to our region. Edmund H. Osthaus was born in Hildesheim, Germany in 1858. His family moved to Mexico for a short period while his father enjoyed a diplomatic post. Moving back, Osterhaus studied art in Germany. At the age off 34 he emigrated to the United States.
Osthaus moved to Ohio to become Chief Instructor at the Toledo Academy of Art in 1886. Specializing in the painting of field trial champion pointers and setters he enjoyed the patronage of the DuPont family for whom he had created paintings, prints OSTHAUS
