Forest and Fallen Tree #19
Archibald Willard (American, 1836-1918)
Oil on Canvas, 17 1/2 x 23 1/2 in.
Loan Courtesy of the Western Reserve Historical Society
Self-taught artist from Wellington, Ohio, Archibald Willard, catapulted to sudden and unexpected artistic fame in 1876, when his Spirit of 76, Yankee Doodle was exhibited at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition and quickly became an icon of American patriotism in the process. This work, by contrast, is a more intimate study of a woodland glen, probably painted for himself rather than on commission.
