The Union Club of Cleveland
James Dempsey was a distinguished Cleveland attorney who established the August firm of Squire, Sanders and Dempsey. Educated at Kenyon College and Columbia University, he was devoted to improving education, and sat on the boards of University School and his alma mater Kenyon College. He also served as director of many Cleveland companies including Union Commerce National Bank, Grasselli Chemical Company, and Bourne-Fuller company. The likeness of Dempsey is the work of N. M. Miller, a professional Washington, DC based portraitist who painted a likeness of Walter Reed in 1915 for the Walter Reed Army Hospital. This painting was also likely produced from a photograph, like that of Walter Reed's, rather than being painted from life.
Mr. Dempsey served as President with the Union Club from 1903 to 1905
