Cleveland philanthropist Case most enduring legacy was his $1 million anonymous endowment for the establishment of a technical school to teach pure science, forming the basis of the Case School of Applied Science, now Case Western Reserve University.

Although Case was a Yale-trained lawyer, he never practiced the law. Rather, he devoted himself to the pursuit of scholarly subjects.

In addition to founding the Case School of Applied Science, his other philanthropic endeavors included The Old Stone Church, Cleveland Library Association, Cleveland Female Seminary and the Cleveland Orphan Society.
